Dear Dave,
I am trying to find the lyrics and also a recording of your sweet song "Minot's Light." I heard the song about 10 years ago on the radio and wrote down the lyrics, but now have forgotten the tune! Also, any chance you will be playing in Burlington any time soon? Thank you so much.

Hey Leslie, no plans right now, but Phoenix is definitely on my list. If you're signed up on the mailing list I will surely let you know when it's on the calendar. So you're a fan of The Hokester? I heard once that I was in a band with him...

Dave, I was cleaning out my purse and found a note that I wrote with your website on it and here I am. You are a great seat mate and I really enjoyed talking with you. I hope that all is OK with you. I listened to "Pearl". I like it. Maybe we will meet again in the air. I hope your family is doing good. Go Buckeye's!!!!!

Hi Larilee, good to hear from you and thanks for your kind words. I'm truly sorry for your chronic "Go Bucks" affliction, though I'm sure a helpful, Michigan-sponsored support group can be found in your area. It was a pleasure meeting you and I look forward to the next time I sit in Row 12.

My name is Bob Frey. I'm a teacher and a musician, live in Mpls. I'm originally from Cleveland, was introduced to your stuff from some tapes Mark Miller gave me when we spent a few summers painting schools together in St. Joe, MI. Over the years, I return to those tapes now and again. Sometimes I cover "Ballad of Joseph Schultz" in my sets- hope that's ok, now the secrets loose!- and I always loved "Seija," even though I've never played it out. Anyway, good luck on the journey, hope to see you in the Cities sometime. Take care, Bob
Hey Bob,
Love it when other people choose to cover my songs. Thanks for the kind words and good luck. "Seija"? Really? I think I wrote that back in high school. I wonder how it goes...

Hi Dave,
Goo dluck with the songwriting - just pretend you are at a music writing festival! You have so many memories of life in Akron. Missing you and would love to see you anytime. We just returned from a sunny and windy weekend of sailing - how fun! The girls are all great and often ask when you are going to show up next?!
Take good care and love from all of the Merkle-Scotlands,

Thanks, Mary. California's been great, and Akron's been fruitful, but I do miss my favorite stop off the road between New York and Boston. Will definitely let you all know when I'm on the East Coast and mobile.
Big love to the M-S Group,

Oh no - this means no more jams at Chez Crossland. Boo hoo. It's been years since we've been to one, and we came to them late relative to how long they'd been going on, but they will always hold a special place in the hearts of my husband and I - especially the one on New Year's Eve 1999. So - since you're in town this week, when and were is the gig? It's been way too long since we've heard you live. Hope Andy is doing well and love to your Dad from the Schinker family.
Hey Debbie, not in town for a gig, just hanging with my dad and seeing what comes out of this pen. Don't know the last time he had a "jam". Did you party like it was 1999?

Rockland! If I remember correctly..."the car" was from your college days. :-)
Oh, THAT Kim. Excuuuse me...
Yes, "the car" was from my college days --and earlier-- only we didn't refer to it as "the car", we called it "the tank". And it got totaled in Toledo. (Yes, I was driving it, but there's more to the story.)
How's Rockland these days? Send me an email and keep in touch.

Dave,
Any chance of you coming back to Ann Arbor or the Detroit area to play a gig this year? Maybe at the Ark? I gave you the article from The Michigan Daily when you played here last year and showed you the copy of your college LP "Don't Know Where I'm Goin'". My wife, Tracy, and I would love to see you play live again. My kids still love singing "Daddy was a Train Man" with me on long road trips! LOL We're really glad that you're moving on in the music industry. I'll be excited to tell the "remember when" stories when you hit it big. You bring back great memories for us in reference to our Michigan days. Thanks. Dave

Hey Ben, really glad you like the Pearl CD. As for Mother Country, man what a song. I first learned it from my dad's musician friends who would come over for music parties at our house when I was a kid. It was a special part of the very late night when that song came out. Dave:
Amazing job at the John Stewart tribute show at the Towne Crier the other night -- I said hello briefly with my college buddy (John's son) MIke and wanted to thank you again for an unforgettable evening. You are a supremely talented dude, and Buffy was right; you did such an amazing job with Mother Country. And now I find out that my old buddy Amy Speace is on your live set record! How much @ss does that kick? I knew Amy way back before the Twangirl days when she was playing Lady Macbeth in a hole-in-the-wall on the Lower East Side.
Thanks again. I'm adding you to my cd collection, that's for sure.
Hey Dave, thank you for introducing yourself and for the kind words about the tribute show at the Towne Crier. It was a special night, indeed, and I must admit, I was blown away by what Buffy said, not to mention the grace with which she carried herself all evening. And what a great feeling playing with those guys --more like playing with your own brothers that just a great band. 100% comeraderie and a living testament to the way John and his music touched each of our lives.
So you know the Speacetress? And you went to college with Mikael? And we hadn't met before? How is this???

Hallo Dave!
I am from Serbia and I am doing a research on Joseph Schultz. Admiring the guy for what he has done there is one serbian humanitarian organization that wants to make him a statue in his home city(if it would be possible). As you wrote a song about him I thought that you might know also the name of his home town or something else usuful. Where could I hear "The ballad of Joseph Schultz"? The text is beautiful.
Thank you!
I hope that I will hear from you very soon!
Nikola
Hi Nikola,
I first ran across the story of Joseph Schultz while taking a college course on the history of warfare from the point of view of soldiers throughout 20th Century. I was stunned by the bravery of this man and the sacrifice he made for his conscience --to the point where I couldn't get the images out of my head and woke up one morning writing that song.
At present I'm pretty busy at a music conference in Memphis, but I am very interested in learning more about how Joseph Schultz is perceived in the country where he died, and would more than welcome such a conversation.
So thank you for reaching out. I've got your email address and will be in touch with you very soon.
Peace,

Hi Dave,
Any plans to record your favorite John Stewart songs in honor of his recent passing? I'm sure it must have been a great privilege to work with him in "Darwin's Army".
Hope to catch one of your shows in 2008.
Richard, wow, favorite John Stewart songs...
It's a little difficult for me to answer you right now. I was on the road, criss-crossing the continental divide when I heard that John was in the hospital, and losing him has been a hard blow that I haven't recovered from yet.
Touring with John and working on Darwin's Army together gave me some of the most insanely fun and musically fulfilling times of my life. Long before that, though --and long before I first met him on the 30th anniversary of Bobby Kennedy's assassination, mind you-- his songs were literally at the heart of my growing up years and musical home. When John took me under his wing, it was at a very difficult time in my life, and his influence was far greater than I think he even realized.
John, il maestro angelbravo, was a friend, mentor, one of the most creative spirits I have ever known, and I will miss him mightily for a long time to come.
So yes, I would love to record entire albums of his songs sometime. But I'll have to ride a few things out before I say more than that. Stay tuned...
Truly as the sun, truly as the rain,
dave

Hey Dave,
Your music is amazing. I found your cd "Here's to The Ride" at a used book and music store(autographed by you as well). The person selling was a fool, I can not listen to The Ballad of Joseph Schultz without repeating it 3 or 4 times.
Thanks for making decent music in this pop saturated world.
Hey Travis, thank you for your support --and your kind words regarding Joseph Schultz. That song tells a true story about a real guy named Joseph Schultz. I sang it at a festival some years ago in the Chicago area, and a guy from the town where it happened, in what used to be Yugoslavia, came up to me and told me that after the war, people in that village erected a statue of Joseph in the town center. It's a touching story, and I still get shaken up when I think about it. Anyway, glad you like it, and don't forget to listen to a "feel-good" song now and then~
All the best,

Hey!
Your song Pearl came up on my John Denver station on Pandora. I'm not into music for the music. I love the poetry of songwriters such as James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot. Pandora has opened a whole new, less mainstream, world of poetic songwriters, such as John Gorka and Steve Poltz. Anyway, I have a Dave Crossland station on Pandora now. ;-) Coming to Raleigh, NC anytime soon?
Hey Lael, so glad you found me after opening Pandora's box. I haven't checked out pandora.com yet, but I've got some good friends who love it. Thanks for turning me into a radio station. I am honored, of course. Don't know when I'm coming to North Carolina next, but check in on the website now and then --and it doesn't hurt to call your local venues demanding they book your favorite independent artists...

Hey Dave, I just ran across your website as I was looking for lyrics of "Minot's Light" and wanted to say hello and hope everything is well. I still listen to your CD's all the time and I love them. I have the "here's to the ride" cd that you signed for me so when I was little (I remember feeling so lucky to have it signed by you)- I'm a junior at UVM now, time fliesss!. Hope all is well and you're still singing!
Hey Jessie, great to hear from you! Hope you are diggin' the Groovy UV college experience and that you are studying hard.
Hope to see you at a gig up in Burlington sometime soon~

Dave - I was really enjoying your recent appearance as the warm-up for Shawn Colvin at the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, IL. As a reformed liberal, I found your closing comments regarding the "lack of compassion of the (Bush)Administration" both very unprofessional and immature. The audience has spent good money to hear music and not trite political commentary from performers looking for attention via a cheap shot. Your level of political awareness can be easliy found on programs like "The View" for much less cost that the price of my concert tickets. Needless to say, I plan to share my thoughts with the College of Dupage. Fortunately, my evening and that of my friends was salvaged by Shawn Colvin, a professional whose style and level of class you should learn.
Greetings Ron,
And may I say, sir, that postings like yours don't come along too often, so thanks for livening things up, and let me see if I can address it.
First of all, I agree with you that Shawn is one classy performer and individual, from whom anyone could learn a thing or two, and I'm glad she made your evening worthwhile. I loved doing those shows with her, playing for such open and giving audiences, meeting the good people behind the venues, and especially all who came up to say hello after the shows and during the breaks.
If I'm not mistaken, I think it's the introduction to my last song, "Hard to Say", that you take issue with. I believe I said something like, "...here's a song about love, forgiveness, peace and redemption...[yadda-yadda-yadda]...and everything else our current administration stands for~"
Most people got a little chuckle out of that, whether from irony or chagrin, and I had fun saying it, but I was hardly trying to start a political rally or anything. And no way would I have expected all 900 people there to agree with my little aside --or any one thing said on stage that night. (With the possible exception that Shawn's black rubber miniskirt probably WAS making it difficult for her to move around on the stool...)
I'm sorry if that nearly wrecked you entire evening, and I'm honored that at least you enjoyed my set up to the dreaded moment. But what you've said brings up some questions for me.
Should we really block entertainers from working if they have uttered words in their shows that have offended someone? Should we insist that the world of the arts divorce itself from social expression? What would that do to music? Comedy? Poetry? Novels? Paintings? Sculptures? Plays, dance and everything else?
Life? Ticket values?...
What would that do to our society? And how could anyone have any fun at all?
Basically, the upshot is that when I'm saying stuff on stage, I'm not claiming supreme enlightenment or great knowledge in all things. I'm just being me. I'm having fun, I want to share whatever I have with you, sometimes I want to shake you up a little bit, and I want to hear what you have to say, too.
So here's a dare for you: Should you deign ever to see me live again, come introduce yourself. I will buy you the beer.
One more thing before I go. I see you've publicly posted your personal email address with your comment, so I'm going to assume that you wouldn't have done that unless you wanted it there. That said, if at some point you would like me or my web people to remove it, just let us know.
Anyone else out there have an opinion on all of this?

Hey, Dave, just want to say again what a fantastic show last week at Off-the-Common. It was a real treat to hear you in a coffeehouse venue where people really listened (and 'sang' along silently!). Several songs I hadn't heard live before, like Minot's Light. This was the first I heard Pearl solo and it was really great. The performance of Home was especially moving, and the genuinely demanded Shenandoah encore was the cherry on top! And thanks for being such a good sport about requests which lengthened the second set.
Safe journeys over the holidays and in the new year,

I think that was a white Studebaker - I was one of the lucky Nova Scotians to meet you on your trip ..... too bad about the border stuff :(
Have never forgotten you and your music. You have true talent. Hope I'll get to see a show someday!!
Shannon! Damn you're good! You are an asset to your community and a model for Canadians everywhere.
Thank you for your keen skills of memory and observation, likewise the kind words regarding yours truly. I would love to make an uneventful trip to Nova Scotia in the near future.
That's right, good people, when I was just out of college and still had hair like the picture on my college meal card (see the news item about my endorsement deal), I was held up at the Canadian border for what were deemed "undeclared commercial goods." --About 15 cassette tapes I had made of my songs to give as gifts to my friends in Nova Scotia.
Long story short, they SEIZED MY CAR, an ivory colored 1959 Studebaker Lark, flat-head six, three-on-the-tree with overdrive. (Yes, it was my only set of wheels and I drove it everywhere.) Luckily, the blue book value rang in at a whopping $250 USD, so I spent all the cash I had (they had counted it) and bought my car back from Madame QEII, herself.
(Don't know what she did with the tapes, but touched she so admires my work as to never give them back.)

Hey, Dave, congrats on the selection to showcase at SW Reg. Folk Alliance at the end of Sept. The friend who called my attention to this also wanted me to ask you why 'Eleanor Rigby' on _Molly's Street_ (as opposed to another Beatles song). I keep forgetting to ask when I see you.
Hey, congrats too on the Gig Harbor Festival songwriting finalist. Looks like you might be on the wrong side of the sound, but if you have some time to kill in the Seattle area and feel like a busman's holiday, I recommend to you a band called The Starlings. Joy Mills is a good writer with an amazing voice.
Safe journeys,
Elise
To Elise,
Or should I say "Fur Elise"?
"Eleanor Rigby" made it on the CD as a fluke, really. I was rehearsing with my band, getting ready for a festival in Southern Ohio when I broke a string. So while I'm digging through my guitar case, looking for an ever-elusive G-string, Tate starts playing straight quarters down low on the bass. Tim Longfellow got into it and dialed up a string synth sound on his keyboard and started up with the violin parts, next thing you know, the whole band was off and running without me. I started singing what words I could remember into the mike while winding up my guitar. It sounded so good that night, I told the band that I'd learn the words if they would do that again tomorrow. I did, they did, and somebody got it on digital tape. What you hear on Molly's Street was recorded live at the festival and only the second time we'd ever played through the song itself.

Dear David,
Of all the Matthew Shepard tributes, and they are all great and somewhat unrecognized for now, but yours, it is your song that moves me the most. Of all the 46 or more songs, it is yours that I continue to play. Your voice is true-it's spot on perfect. This is the kind of music that legends are made off. Today's society as others have been very very slow to grasp the significance of what's been happening and the meaning and beauty of your music. David-keep up and keep the faith. God blesses you.
Best wishes,
Frank Nieves
Frank,
Thank you so much for the kind words. I first ran across the story of Matthew Shepard while reading the New York TImes one morning. I was flipping the pages and saw a picture of a scarecrow with the words, "I'm gay" spray-painted on its head. I had an instant case of "what the hell is going on now and why is this on page 13" and read on to find that a fraternity in Fort Collins, CO, had placed this scarecrow on top of its float in the homecoming parade as a display of support for what was to be murder. Matthew was still alive then, in a coma at the hospital in Laramie, and I started following the papers every day, incredulous at the behavior of human beings. I really don't understand people sometimes. Anyway, I hope the song is able to make some kind of difference out there in the world somehow. Thank you for letting me know that it is alive and resonating.
Peace,
Dave

Hi,
Did you do a song about a lighthouse in Boston? The lighthouse blinks 143...if so, is it on one of your albums...if not, do you happen to know who does it?
Thanks so much,
LOVE your music!
Sherry
Hi Sherry, I do in fact have a song about a lighthouse on the Massachusetts coast. It's called Minot's Light and it was built some time around the turn of the last century. The man who first operated it would start his evenings by flashing 1-4-3 to his family living back on shore in the lighthouse keeper's residence. It was his way of saying "I-LOVE-YOU" and the lighthouse flashes the same signal to this day.
The song is named after the lighthouse and it's on "Here's to the Ride," my very first CD. I recorded it after graduating from college and it's probably my most popular CD among the true, die-hard folkies.
If you're ever in the Boston area, take some time to visit the South Shore. You'll see the lighthouse standing straight out of the water between the towns of Scituate and Cohasset.
Thanks for the kind words and take care, Dave

Dave, Wondering if you happen to have a copy of your college thesis on W. Guthrie. I am writing one myself (a thesis, that is) next semester and I am doing it on the importance of nature/natural surroundings to children and adults. I am using folk song lyrics also to illustrate my points, as well, and any info I can get on folk singers is helpful. Seeing someone else's "take" on Guthrie would be terrific! Thanks and hope to see you playing again soon, our last time was GREAT!!!!
Hey Kate, a lot of people have been asking me about that thesis lately, so I'm going to try to dig it up after I'm back from Falcon Ridge. It's been a while, but I wrote it on Woody and how his ideas and music may have evolved given who he was and how he experienced his surroundings --family, Huntington's, Dust Bowl, adoring labor activists, etc. --Actually, it sounds like there might be some overlap given what you're writing about. In any case, send Mary an email on how to get in touch with you and, if I find it, maybe we can send you a copy. Thanks for askin'. 'Leven peas, dave

Yo Jim, thanks for upgrading the site --and for the wee little brewskis the other night. Diggin' your new "Internationale" song. We should definitely crash Ducky's wide-screen redsoxvision soon, and have you lay that one down.

Hi Dave, Sounds like all is well. Any chance you'll visit Cohasset
in the fall? Our Church would love to hire you for a Concert.
Let me know, we miss you, Jack
